THE ARTIST
Daughter of an architect, Catarina always loved being in her father's atelier and using his technical pens to create drawings without much meaning. Despite this interest, her focus for many years was directed toward sports, particularly her journey as a tennis player, which took her to the USA.
Her artistic path only began to truly take shape in 2018 when she decided to move to Porto, a city she fell in love with. Finding herself in a new city with weekends entirely to herself, she bought the same pens she remembered from her father’s atelier and spent countless hours creating, both to entertain herself and to make sense of her experiences.
Nowadays, drawing and creating have become essential in her life, but the pens have been replaced by digital drawing, acrylic paints, and LED neon strips, allowing her to craft more rich and thought-provoking works. However, one thing remains unchanged: her source of inspiration. Human behaviour and society, which simultaneously disturb and fascinate her, have always been and continue to be her greatest inspiration. It is this mix of fascination and unease that often leads Catarina to add a layer of critique and humor to her works.
Catarina processes and becomes aware of the complexity of life through her creations. Because of this, she hopes her work encourages people to reflect on and analyze human behaviours, which are sometimes difficult to understand, in a light and anecdotal way, so that these behaviours can be brought into conscious discussion rather than remaining buried in the layers of the unconscious.
